Red Dead Redemption 2 Fan Finds Braithwaite Manor in Real Life

Braithwaite Manor is one of the more memorable locations in Red Dead Redemption 2. The seat of the aristocratic Braithwaite family burns to the ground during the climax of RDR2’s third story chapter. However, its possible inspiration lives on in the real world.

A Red Dead Redemption 2 player recently posted a photo of a remarkably similar house in Louisiana. While the poster isn’t the first to spot this particular plantation house, it remains an exciting intersection between the game and reality.

The post was ultimately deleted by the subreddit’s moderators, though the title and image are still up. The picture shows the Oak Alley Plantation, a National Historic Site in St. James Parish, Louisiana. Both have a balcony running the length of the facade and reaching partway around the side and three windows extending from the roof. In addition, they share a long, tree-lined avenue leading to the house. This “Oak Alley” gives the real-world plantation its name and is crucial to Braithwaite Manor’s iconic look. A comment under an earlier post on the same subreddit even points out that the two buildings’ interiors are remarkably similar.

It’s also worth noting that this discovery is not particularly new. The thread mentioning the interiors went up in January of 2019. Since then, multiple users have posted similar images on the Red Dead Redemption subreddit. Other Reddit users pointed out the multitude of similar posts, some leaving sarcastic comments. A few even demanded the moderators remove the post, a campaign that appears to have been successful. However, not everyone was so negative, with a few commenters claiming to have never seen the comparison before.

Rockstar Games never officially confirmed that it based Braithwaite Manor on the real-world Oak Alley Plantation. However, the studio would have used multiple reference photos when designing environments in Red Dead Redemption 2. Plus, it wouldn’t be the first time Rockstar drew inspiration from real-life locations. Not to mention that Oak Valley is already somewhat famous in its own right. It appeared in the 1993 film Interview with a Vampire and Beyoncé’s “Déjà Vu” music video from 2006.

As stated, many fans are already aware of the connection between Braithwaite Manor and Oak Alley Plantation. But while it’s not the freshest observation, it’s an interesting piece of Red Dead Redemption 2 trivia. Meanwhile, Oak Alley Plantation is also a tourist attraction, in case anyone’s planning a gaming-themed road trip.

Red Dead Redemption 2 is available now for PC, PS4, Stadia, and Xbox One.
