PlayStation Fan Gives PS5 and DualSense Controller PS1-Inspired Retro Makeover
While going forward in gaming is usually a good thing, either technologically, commercially, or in terms of finding new ways to tell complex digital stories, there are times when it's good to sit back and remember the days of yore. It's because of these trips down memory lane that cause some fans to look back over the years. Take the modder who demade Resident Evil Village to make it look like a PS1 game, for example. It's just not games either as one PlayStation fan has taken their modern system and given it a retro look.
In a recent post on the PlayStation subreddit, user blakeprice1 uploaded an image showing their PS5 console and the DualSense controller. Only, instead of the standard white color, it's been customized to look like the PS1. It has that signature gray look to it that's often associated with Sony's first console. People in the comments have shown their support of the original poster's work, remarking on the quality of the coloring and the attention to detail on the controller's D-pad. They don't mention how they went about making it look like a PS1, but it's assumed that it's been painted.
What blakeprice1 has done is not only show off their skills, but instill a sense of nostalgia in the community. Some fans are more than keen to harken back to the classics, particularly when it comes to the PlayStation. Recently, some people were challenged by a YouTuber to come up with their dream PS1 game collection using a budget of just $15. Things like this show that just because games and consoles become old, it does not mean the community has forgotten about them.
It may also not be just about visually downgrading a PS5 to look like an older system. Given that Sony unveiled two new colors for the DualSense controller, Cosmic Red and Midnight Black, it's possible that some fans just want their console and peripherals to look a little different to how they come out the box. Some may even be saddened that the recent McDonald's-themed PS5 controller wasn't real, which would likely have been something of a collector's item.
Modern game demakes, painting a PS5 gray, or being excited about finding PS1 games in an attic, show that the community is not ready to give up on retro gaming just yet. As advanced as the video game world is fast becoming, people like blakeprice1 are proof that the earlier generation systems and titles will always have a place in people's hearts. Sony itself acknowledged this when it recently discounted a ton of retro games.
